My roommate has a shower loofah but it looks pretty gross to me. How do you know when a loofah sponge is past its prime and needs to be thrown away?

If it looks dirty or smells bad, it's time to throw it out. Tell your roommate that it looks gross and that you think he/she should purchase a new one. There is no reason for you to have to feel gross or uncomfortable in your own shower.
I've used a loofah pad a couple of times in my life. I would say that if you use it more than 4 times within a month, you need to change it out at the turn of the next month. Loofah pads are pretty tough but at the same time you will never get all the dirt out of it like you want which means so many times of using it can result in just adding more dirt to the body than cleaning the body.

I don't have much experience using these, but I would imagine it'd need to be thrown out if it started to smell badly, or started to grow mold from never being cleaned. It would definitely need to be replaced if it looks like it's starting to fall apart or disintegrate--then again, it might depend on the type of loofah (some are made of plastic and others are made with more natural materials, so I'd assume the latter would get old a little more quickly than the plastic kinds).
